Features of Flush in Poker
To put it simply, a flush is a hand with five cards of the same suit. The hand’s strength depends on the highest card. For example, if two players have a poker flush, the one who has the highest card – wins. At the same time, if both players have the same high card flush, the second highest is taken into account, and so on. According to the most common poker rules, a flush wins over a straight but loses against a full house.
Here is an example. Let’s suppose that after the river we’ve got three cards of the same suit on the board: 5 of diamonds, 2 of diamonds and a queen of diamonds. The first player gets a king of diamonds and a jack of diamonds. The second one has an Ace of diamonds and 7 of diamonds. The highest card is the ace of diamonds, so, the second player wins. Also, as we have already stated in this article, a player with a flush will always win over all other hands except a full house.
In addition, it is important to mention that there are a few types of what is a flush in poker:
- Ordinary flush – five cards of the same suit, but they do not form a sequence;
- Straight flush – the same suit and forms a sequence;
- Royal flush poker – a sequence of 5 cards of the same suit with an ace.
Probability of getting flush in poker
Of course, it is not possible to calculate an exact probability of getting a flush. Nevertheless, there are some statistical studies that might be quite useful to determine poker hands odds. According to the Texas Holdem chart, the probabilities are as follows:

- Ordinary flush: 1/509 or 0.1965%;
